Advanced Surgical Technologies
Northridge Hospital Medical Center's technologically advanced surgical services include specialty suites for cardiovascular, endoscopics, vascular, and trauma surgery. We were the first facility in California to have two fully integrated high definition EndoSuite® Operating Rooms. They feature the latest in camera and digital capture technology, including HDTV monitors to provide our surgical teams the best visualization possible during minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Physician expertise and advanced medical technology is why our community counts on Northridge Hospital for surgical excellence. From open heart surgery to new "minimally invasive" procedures we provide extensive surgical services. We are one of the few hospitals in the area to offer minimally invasive Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery. Our patients share their stories of how their rapid recoveries helped them resume active lifestyles in the Fall 2011 issue of HealthSpeak.
We provide both inpatient and outpatient surgery in comfortable and accessible settings. Surgical services are offered in the main hospital, and at the Betty J. Weiland Ambulatory Surgery Center. Care is provided for all age groups, with evaluation of each patient's needs on an individual basis. The surgeon, operating room nurses, and allied health professionals function as a team providing perioperative assessment and care.
Our specially trained physicians, nurses, clinical and administrative staff care for patients' needs with the utmost compassion and respect for privacy. We are proud that many of our surgical nurses have worked here for more than 15 years, and this is one reason more than 10,000 individuals use our surgical services each year. And, our surgical medical staff is comprised of more than 151 board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists.
The surgical department provides cardiac, colorectal, ENT, general, OB/GYN, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, oral, orthopedic, thoracic, oncology, peripheral vascular, plastic, urology, and endoscopic services. You can read more about surgeries and procedures in our online Pre & Post-Op Library.
As a Level II trauma facility, we are prepared to address the most critical cases immediately. We have a designated surgical suite equipped just for trauma cases.
One of Northridge Hospital's advanced technologies for severe traumas is the "cell saver" blood recovery system. The "cell saver" allows our surgical team to collect a patient's blood that is shed before or during surgery, and cleanses and recycles the elements of it back during the surgery. This results in shorter surgery time, reduces the use of less outside blood, and reduces the chance of blood-borne infections.
In our cardiac surgical suites, our new state-of-the-art heart lung machines provide artificial circulation while the heart is stopped and allow quick specimen processing in the surgical suite while the patient is asleep. This superior system decreases wait time of specimen processing through the laboratory, thus shortening the time the patient is in surgery. Our cardiologists also practice a more advanced surgical procedure called off pump surgery, which stabilizes a portion of the heart to allow other parts to function normally through surgery.
Through the use of a transoesophageal echocardiography, our surgeons are able to take a picture of the heart while still working on it. The image transducer is placed in the throat directly behind the heart, and the new biplane technology produces clearer and more precise images. Our surgeons are now able to clearly evaluate cardiac structure, function, and vascular anatomy during by-pass and valve surgery.
Neuro Spine Surgery
In the specially designed Neuro Spine Suite, minimally invasive procedures are aided by the use of a neuro microscope. The microscope magnifies incisions by displaying digital real-time images on a plasma screen located in the suite.
