What is a Gamma Knife?

Powerful and Precise Neurosurgery Tool

The Gamma Knife is a neurosurgery tool that, despite its name, is not a knife at all. This leading edge in brain surgery doesn't even include a blade, is virtually painless, and does not require the head to be shaved.

Gamma Knife technology delivers high-energy radiation from 201 gamma ray sources at a precise, physician-defined target in the brain such as a tumor, abnormal blood vessel or abnormally functioning group of cells. Using this technology, the diseased tissue in delicate locations can be treated with unprecedented accuracy while sparing the normal surrounding tissue. This procedure has provided new hope to many patients with complex or inoperable brain tumors and multiple other brain disorders.

The Gamma Knife's accuracy - within less than two-tenths of a millimeter - makes this the technology of choice to safely treat certain diseases of the brain, especially those in which nearby brain tissue is crucial for normal functioning of the patient. It has undergone over 25 years of evolution using the latest in imaging and computer technology. Procedures can be performed in a short time period with unmatched precision. More than 300,000 patients around the world have had Gamma Knife radiosurgery and its impressive results have truly revolutionized the treatment of brain disorders.

Under the expertise of a neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist and other specialists, patients are often able to leave the hospital the same day and can immediately return to their normal active lifestyles. Patients avoid risks associated with standard open surgery, general anesthesia, a long hospital stay and rehabilitation, or even a single incision.

Gamma Knife treatment does not involve multiple visits to the hospital and the patient does not incur operating room or post-operative intensive care costs. It is generally considered to be a cost effective alternative to conventional brain surgery for certain types of cases. Gamma Knife treatment is covered by most insurance plans.

As one of several options available to patients with brain disorders, Gamma Knife may not be appropriate in all cases. However, in many cases it may be a viable alternative that offers hope for a better quality of life.

Gamma Knife is also a treatment option for patients who:

  • Are unable to undergo conventional neurosurgery
  • Need treatment in addition to chemotherapy
  • Need treatment in addition to radiation therapy
  • Need treatment in addition to brain surgery

Gamma Knife Technology

The Leksell Gamma Knife® achieves unsurpassed accuracy in a shorter time frame than previous models. The refinements incorporated in this model streamline the treatment process, improving it for both clinicians and patients. It is the most successful radiosurgery weapon in the United States in the fight against brain disorders and the third refinement of the Gamma Knife since 1988.

This Gamma Knife now includes:

  • Digital integration of the system from the scanner to the treatment unit, including data storage to improve accuracy, safety and speed of the procedure.
  • Treatment plans can be produced faster with Leksell GammaPlan®.
  • The motorized Automatic Positioning System streamlines patient positioning and reduces treatment time.

The design of the Gamma Knife Center meets the rigorous standards for safety and efficacy set by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, local and regional safety boards.
