Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers Are Our Shining Stars!

Pride, fulfillment, friendship, and knowledge are only a few of the personal rewards that can be discovered as a volunteer. The dedicated service of the Northridge Hospital volunteers has a profound and positive effect on many areas of the hospital.

Who knew that dogs were also volunteers at Northridge Hospital. A visit from a friendly dog can be just the right medicine. Perhaps that’s why Paws That Refresh, our pet therapy program is such a success. Accompanied by its trained owner-volunteer, a pet therapy dog will visit most of the medical floors, twice daily, delivering unconditional love to the bedside of our patients.

Most volunteer shifts are four hours long. Scheduling is flexible. You will be eligible to receive a letter of recommendation and documentation of community service after the completion of 100 hours of service. To become a volunteer, or to find out more information, please contact the Volunteer office at 818-885-8500, ext. 2961.

The opportunities to make a difference are numerous. The rewards in becoming a volunteer are countless. Some of our unique volunteer opportunities include:

  • Ambassadors Ambassadors provide personal attention and assistance to patients and families, whether by greeting and escorting visitors, or providing a personal touch to those in need.
  • Surgery Liaison These individuals care for family members and visitors of patients during surgery. They assist staff with family communication, as well as delivering materials throughout the facility.

Gift Shop is a Must for Savvy Shoppers. Our Auxiliary Gift Shop offers unique gifts or flowers for your loved one. The Gift Shop is located in the hospital main lobby and is run by volunteers for the benefit of Northridge Hospital.

  • Hospital Departments Whether it is to welcome patients or perform light front-office duties, these volunteers provide a personal touch to departments such as Admitting, Radiology, and Central Supply.
  • Gift Shop This group of volunteers operates the Gift Shop located at Northridge Hospital. All gift shop revenue is donated to the hospital to support patient services, purchase essential equipment, fund annual scholarships, and much more.
  • Volunteer Escort Office and Patient Transport Volunteers provide personal attention to patients during admission and discharge, deliver materials between departments, and work on bulk mailing projects.
  • Trauma/Emergency Room Volunteers These unique volunteers assist the medical trauma team by attending to the victims' families and offering emotional support to those in a vulnerable emotional state. They assist with many individual needs of patients and families during this stressful time. These volunteers have received some of the nation's most prestigious service awards, including the Shining Point of Light Award from a U.S. President.
  • Humor Cart Sponsored and coordinated by the Jewish Women International, a community service organization, the Humor Cart provides joy and laughter through comedy to more than 5,000 patients and families each year at the facility.
  • Regional Occupational Program (ROP) and the Medical Magnet Program These partnerships provide students the opportunity for practical healthcare experience. ROP is a partnership with area high schools, which provides on-the-job training in a community classroom setting and assists students in gaining helpful insights in determining and achieving their future goals. The Medical Magnet program with Van Nuys High School provides career experience and job shadowing. Both are mentor-oriented programs that offer San Fernando Valley teens a unique and valuable experience.
  • Volunteens We offer more than 250 students from 16 San Fernando Valley high schools volunteer opportunities in a hospital setting. It provides opportunities for young adults ages 16 to 18 to care for others, gain leadership experience as a Volunteen officer, and an introduction to medical careers. For many, volunteering also meets their community service requirement for college. For more information about our Volunteen program, please call 818-885-8500, ext. 2961.

Join Our Auxiliary

The Northridge Hospital Medical Center Auxiliary is a fundraising group made up of volunteers and hospital staff. Auxiliary membership is open to all active NHMC Volunteers and offers numerous leadership and service opportunities. Associate membership is available to anyone. The NHMC Auxiliary is a not-for-profit organization under the Northridge Hospital Foundation.

Auxiliary members operate the hospital Gift Shop and have two or three fundraisers a year. Monthly meetings are held and guest speakers are regularly invited to make presentations to the group. Dues are $15 per year for members and $20 per year for Associate members.

Golden Hour Guild

The Golden Hour Guild is a volunteer fundraising guild dedicated to supporting the Northridge Hospital Trauma Center and the programs that assist its seriously injured victims. Their support helps Northridge Hospital maintain an active trauma center - one of only 13 in Los Angeles County - in times when other facilities have been forced to close.

The guild takes its name from the critical first hour of care after a serious injury that often affects the patient's outcome. This guild organizes and hosts an annual Golden Hour Luncheon that reunites doctors with trauma patients, shows their progress, and provides an uplifting and emotional closure for those involved with the patients.
