Your Numbers Count Winter 2012

Knowing these numbers can help improve your body and mind, even if you're not a math whiz. Get the healthy 411 and know your numbers for a healthier you. Prevent the top three causes of death in the U.S. ---  heart disease, cancer and stroke. Well-known prevention methods for all three include exercising, healthy eating, managing diabetes, not smoking and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol. Surgical Excellence Fall 2011

Always looking ahead! That’s how Northridge Hospital Medical Center maintains our commitment to offer the latest medical advancements that result in improved patient outcomes. We are the only hospital in the San Fernando Valley equipped to treat a wide range of surgical needs with minimally invasive technology.

Case in point: we are one of the few hospitals in the area to offer minimally invasive Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery. Plus, we were the first facility in California to have two fully integrated high definition EndoSuite® Operating Rooms. They feature the latest in camera and digital capture technology, including HDTV monitors to provide our surgical teams the best visualization possible. Summer 2011 Happily Ever Afters

Inspiring stories of hope and healing are featured in our current issue as patients share their recoveries and are rejoined in marital bliss. And, Jaimee Jessop can hold up her head, feed herself and is learning to walk—again— precious milestones every parent awaits. But Jaimee’s first steps are nothing short of a miracle for the Jessops, who found her unconscious and in full cardiac arrest when she was just 3 years old.

During the past 10 years, Northridge Hospital Medical Center has reached out to fortify our community support by awarding more than $1.1 million in community grants to 64 nonprofit groups. Northridge Hospital proudly awarded six grants, this year, totaling $151,760. Read all the stories in our current issue.

Winter 2011
First & Only Pediatric Trauma Center

Northridge Hospital now boasts the only Pediatric Trauma Center in the San Fernando Valley. The Level II Richie Pediatric Trauma Center opened this past fall and provides life-saving care to infants, children and adolescents. Care for our smallest patients begins with our Babies First services and extends through our pediatric services with a specialized Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and our trauma care.

"Oh Baby!" Fall 2009

n the Fall 2009 "Oh Baby!" issue of HealthSpeak we explore clinical research at Northridge Hospital, learn about more prestigious honors for excellence, and explore our Babies First program. We invite you to read the full issue.

The nervous system is our body’s communication network. It begins in the brain, extends down the spinal cord and branches out to every organ and body part. Impairment can prevent this complex web of nerves from carrying important messages about pain, heat and cold to the brain. The current issue also explores the Neuroscience Institute: a combination of four specialty programs which treat a wide variety of neurological and neurosurgical problems.

Trauma Center, Summer 2009

Northridge Hospital’s Level II Trauma Center is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2009. Last year also marked the 25th anniversary of Los Angeles County’s trauma system. To commemorate this historic date, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors presented Northridge Hospital with a scroll for its outstanding care as one of only 13

designated trauma centers in the network.

Every medical unit at Northridge Hospital Medical Center keeps abreast of the latest technologies. This allows us to continue providing the safest and most effective medical care. Thirty minutes or less. That’s how quickly Northridge Hospital Medical Center’s specialized Cath Lab Team assembles while a heart attack patient is transported to our facility.  We are also one of the first hospitals designated by LA County as a STEMI (heart attack) Center in the Emergency Department for our superior care of heart attack victims.

Revolutionizing Healthcare is featured in the Fall 2008 issue of HealthSpeak . Northridge Hospital Medical Center’s new minimally-invasive and noninvasive treatments trump those of years’ past. Our ability to rapidly evolve with the medical field has resulted in faster, more precise diagnoses, shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries --- whether patients are treated for cancer, a brain tumor or heart disease. The Stroke Center is where doctors use the latest options and evidence-based treatments to fight stroke -- and help patients keep their cool.

Meet the Valley's first robotic surgeon in the Summer 2008 issue of HealthSpeak, Making A Comeback . Our high-tech imaging cafe is now open and features a 64-slice CT scanner that produces extremely detailed images of the heart lung and other organs. Northridge Hospital's School-based Obesity and Diabetes Initiative (SODI) is a win-win for students, parents, teachers and staff at the Los Angeles Unified School District. We also introduce you to six our community board members.

New services that not only improve patient care, but also delight are featured in the Paws for Pet Therapy Winter 2007 HealthSpeak . Learn what a "special touch" really means, especially when it comes to a dose of puppy love. We want you to know that our patient's comfort and safety are a number one priority, and recently our staff has adopted several new measures.

The Steps to Better Health issue features articles on Northridge Hospital as one of the first designated Emergency Heart Centers, and the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition status that is achieved by only 10% of hospitals.

Our mission at Northridge Hospital is to better the lives of our patients, as well as those in our community. The Connecting Our Community issue captures the collaboration of the hospital with our community partners, and shares the story of a very special young lady on a mission "To Catch the Bad Guys".

The Women Treating Women issue of HealthSpeak features the Women's Center, choosing the best surgical care, and a local resident recounts how his life was saved. You can also check out our community class schedule, support groups and more.

The 50th Anniversary HealthSpeak chronicles the history of Northridge Hospital from humble beginnings to everyday miracles. Beginning in 1947, a few visionary citizens took the first tentative steps to expand the San Fernando Valley's access to healthcare services.

The Heart Care Winter 2006 issue of HealthSpeak features advances of the CardioVascular Center in treating heart disease. Other articles talk about the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units, and our state-of-the-art reference laboratory.

Groundbreaking medical advances are the result of new ideas and approaches through clinical research as discussed in the Clinical Research Fall 2005 issue of HealthSpeak . Innovations in the Catherization Laboratory, and the national recognition of the organ donation program are featured in the issue.

Northridge Hospital was the first to bring the Gamma Knife brain surgery to the Valley, and 201 Beams Focused on One Thing: Painless Brain Surgery  is the feature article in Spring 2005 issue .
