CATS Program
The Center for Assault Treatment Services (CATS), founded in 1997, is the only 24-hour, seven days a week program for victims of physical and sexual abuse of all ages in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys of Los Angeles County, California. The center recently changed it's name from Children's Assault Treatment Services to better reflect the service provided to the community.
This very special and sensitive program has three service components to streamline, protect and support victims of sexual abuse:
- Medical evidentiary examinations and forensic interviews provided in a supportive environment by specially trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners
- Case managed counseling and referrals
- Outreach and training
CATS work with law enforcement, child protective services, and the District Attorney's office to assist with the collection of evidence, proper reporting of abuse and follow-up investigation. CATS also collaborate with the local rape crisis center to provide advocates and post abuse treatment for victims; and with local community-based organizations to provide training and education for mandated child abuse reporters and the general public.
Visit the CATS website for additional information, education and training materials, and more resources.
Los Angeles County’s First Family Justice Center Now Open!
Abuse victims can now take back their lives with help from the Valley CARES Family Justice Center -- the first of its kind in Los Angeles County. The Center offers support and services in a safe and comforting place for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.
Amelia’s Story:
“For eight years my partner beat, raped and locked me in the closet until visible injuries healed. My son called the police. Even though it was 11 at night, the center’s sensitive staff and volunteers documented my injuries, collected forensic evidence and comforted me. The Center’s staff helped me regain my life through resume building, employment and educational planning. Today, we are free from violence and stronger as a family.”
Victims like Amelia receive help from the Valley CARES Family Justice Center’s unique collaboration of Advocates, Civil Legal Services, Counselors, Law Enforcement, Child Social Workers, Prosecutors and Forensic Nurse Examiners. Victims can meet with Legal Professionals, receive crisis intervention, and obtain information on shelters and other helpful resources—all while their children play safely in the next room.
